Dr. Albert Edward Ponterio

July 13, 1930 ~ December 15, 2017 (age 87)

Dr. Albert E. Ponterio passed away on December 15, 2017, at Venice Regional Medical Center, Venice, Fla. at the age of 87, after suffering complications from open heart surgery.  He was a resident of Venice, Fla.  Albert was born July 13, 1930, in Staten Island, N.Y. to Albert E. and Helen (May) Ponterio.  He graduated from Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y. with a Pre-Med degree and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. with an M.D.  He was commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Army and served as a physician at Fort Hood, Texas.  He then moved his young family to Johnson City, N.Y., where he began a private medical career spanning several decades.  During his medical career he also worked as a physician for Endicott-Johnson Shoes, GAF and IBM.  He was a highly respected physician, specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology.  He was an avid golfer his entire adult life.  Albert is survived by his first wife, Marie C. (Rizzo) Ponterio; his five children Albert A. (Diana) Ponterio; Susan (Daniel) Neely; Mary Ellen Ponterio; Ann (William) McCullen; James J. (Sissy) Ponterio; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law Helen (Mucio) Valenca; and many nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his step-daughter Kelly (Peter) Epstein; two step-granddaughters and step-son Nicholas Zopp.  He was preceded in death by his second wife Jacqueline Novitske-Ponterio; his parents Albert and Helen Ponterio; his brother Robert and Louis Ponterio; his granddaughter Sarah Ponterio; and his step-son James Zopp.  A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 1:00pm, at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main St, Johnson City.  Interment will be private.  To celebrate his life, a gathering will be held on Thursday from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the Relief Pitcher, 197 Conklin Ave, Binghamton.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Rheumatoid Research Foundation, 2200 Lake Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30319.
