- About Us
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Elizabeth “Betty” Hanky Edwards, 85, of Johnson City, NY, on January 2, 2019, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, after a brief illness. Betty was born on Nov. 12, 1933, in Patterson, NJ. She was the daughter of the late August Hanky, and Elsie Collins Hanky. She graduated from Green Mountain College and Patterson State Teachers College. She is survived by her husband of over 63 years, Dave Edwards; her brother Bob Hanky of Orlando, FL; her three children; David and his wife Carol of Mohnton, PA; Bob and his wife Sue, of Binghamton, NY; and Debra and her husband Gary Starnes of Thompson’s Station, TN. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Rosemary Glanville (David) of Apalachin; Monica Lavis (Timothy) of Binghamton; Brittany Starnes of Thompson Station, TN; George Edwards of Saratoga Springs, FL; and Jennifer Edwards (Julian) of Philadelphia, PA; and one great-grandchild, Clare Elizabeth Glanville of Apalachin. Betty adored children. She was first and foremost, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was especially dedicated to young children, having a career as an elementary school teacher for more than 17 years. Her teaching career began in New Jersey, but most of her teaching years were in Hancock, NY. When Betty and Dave retired in 1990, they started spending winters in Bonita Springs, FL. They bought a home there in 1994, and enjoyed living there until 2016, when they moved to Hilltop Retirement Home in Johnson City. Betty and Dave were active members of the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, FL, serving together in the church Thrift Shop for many years. Betty loved music, enjoyed playing cards, was kindhearted, and was always looking for ways to help others. She loved using new technology and social media to keep in touch with family and friends across the country. She will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be at United Methodist Homes Hilltop Campus 286 Deyo Hill Road, Johnson City, NY. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00, and funeral services will be at 11:00 on Saturday, January 5, 2019. Burial will be at a later date, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Betty’s memory to the Hancock Community Education Foundation (hancockeducationfoundation.org), St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or the Salvation Army.
