John W. Kelly passed away on October 2, 2018 at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his sisters Mildred, Anna, Catherine and Cecelia. He is survived by his wife Rosalie, married for 66 years. He is also survived by his eight children, Susan Mincey and her husband David; John Kelly and his wife Cathy; Joyce Kelly; Debbie Eaton and her husband Larry; Cathy Sanford and her husband Harvey; Diane Decker and her husband Bill; Tom Kelly and his wife Kathy; Beth Kurkoski and her husband Scott; his sisters Gertrude Mangano and Paula Brady; 25 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren with the 60th due next February.
John grew up in Brooklyn and served in the United States Army during World War II. John, Rosalie and their eight children came to Binghamton in 1970, opening a Carvel Ice Cream store on Riverside Drive. He later opened a second Carvel in North Syracuse in 1975 followed by Kelly’s Ice Cream stores in Vestal’s Campus Plaza and Binghamton’s Northgate Plaza. John was devoted to his family and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid Mets fan and loved the outdoors, riding his tractors in the woods, gardening, casinos and his dog Benji (“Big Guy”). The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers at Lourdes Hospice who provided so much assistance to John with their love and exceptional care. The family will receive friends at Most Holy Rosary Church, 2596 Main Street, Maine, New York on Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., followed by a Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at the Maine Cemetery.
