Obituary

Donald Herbert Higgs, a longtime resident of Vestal, NY, passed away peacefully at UHS Wilson Hospital on Saturday just months away from his 90th birthday.  Donald was well known and respected in Broome County as well as Oneonta NY for his beautiful singing voice.  In his younger days, in Oneonta, he often sang for WDOS Radio and had the honor of being invited to join the Tri Cities Opera.  In his older years, he and his wife Marie founded the Frankincense and Myrrh Music Ministry, performing songs co-written with Marie, his pianist.  They published 2 albums together and it was important to him to bring people back to Christianity with their music.  He was a popular vocalist for local churches in Broome County and was also a popular lecture and participated in Eucharistic Ministry.  He even sang with his family in the Welsh Society at many of their Christmas gatherings.  He enjoyed bowling and played in leagues often with his son George, loved baseball and had quite the green thumb as he grew orchids in his younger days.  He was a school teacher in the Binghamton School System for 32 years.  Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Marie Fidelis, his only son George Francis and daughter-in-law, Judith Ann of Johnson City, his daughters Mary Evelyn of Gibson PA and Donna Marie of Vestal NY, and his niece and nephew-in-law Jacqueline Eakin and Ronald Eakin of Horseheads, NY.  A Funeral Mass will be offered at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Vestal at 4pm preceded by an hour of visitation at 3pm on Friday.  There will be a private burial service at Riverhurst Cemetery on Monday at 11am.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude’s Hospital.
