Howard Ralph Dempsey, age 92, passed away peacefully on December 6th, 2020. Born in Auburn, PA on October 10, 1928, Howard “Pop” was raised in Guilford, NY. He was predeceased in 2010 by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Rader Dempsey, his parents Reverend Charles Dempsey and Helen Loomis Dempsey, and two brothers, Paul and Charles “Chuck” Dempsey and their wives Floss Dempsey and Jean Dempsey, and son-in-law Donald Clark. Howard graduated from Guilford High School, where he was a member of the Football and Basketball teams. He served in the United States Army and the Naval Reserves. He worked at IBM Owego for 33 years. He was a devoted family man who loved camping with his family, friends, and relatives. Throughout his life, Howard’s four brothers were his best friends. Family events and vacations with his brothers and their families were particularly enjoyable and memorable. In his post-retirement years, Howard spent his winters in Florida and his summers camping at Kellystone Park in Afton, NY. He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers, but a lover of all sports and always rooted for the “underdog”, unless the Packers were playing. Big Band was his favorite music, which was often playing if you visited his home. His aspirations and interests revolved around his family and his time and energy devoted to his children and grandchildren. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his family and extended family. He was great friend to all and a role model to many. Howard was a kind, thoughtful, and gentle man who had a gift for enriching the lives of others. He was a special man and, if you had the privilege to know him, your life was better for it. He is survived by daughter Cathy Clark; son Michael (Eileen) Dempsey; twins Pamela (Gordon)Gardner and Kevin (Judy) Dempsey; 12 Grandchildren: Christopher (Tracy) Clark, Kelly (Rob) Marcello; Gordon (Cassy) Gardner; Matthew (Amanda) Dempsey; Bridget (Brad) Boston; Charles Gardner and fiancée Jen; William (Emily) Gardner; Mary-Kate (Brent) Parker; Michael Dempsey and fiancée, Leah; Kenneth Gardner and fiancée Britney; David Gardner; Morgan Dempsey. 16 Great-grandchildren: Adrianna, Carolyn, Frankie, Matthew, Blake, Everett, Nicholas, Finnley, Lincoln, Morgan, Isla, Jaxon, Liam, Audrey, Maeve and Amayah. He is also survived by his brothers David (Kay) Dempsey and Richard (Clarissa) Dempsey, his dear friend Millie McKie, and brothers-in-law Neil (Barbara) Rader and Gene “Bud” (Mary) Rader as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews.Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, a private family service will be held at the Barber Memorial Home followed by a military service with honors for the public at Vestal Hills Memorial Park at 12:00 PM on Saturday December 12, 2020.
