Obituary

Jay Allen Decatur, 82, died peacefully at home surrounded by loving family on Saturday, April 23, 2022.  He was born on October 28, 1939 to Eleanor and Halsey Decatur.  Growing up, Jay’s interests centered around nature, a love of animals, sports and fishing.  Jay was a 1957 graduate of Mahopac H.S. and in 1961 he was a graduate of Earlham College, in Richmond, Indiana receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.  Following college, Jay enlisted in the Navy as a medic and was stationed at Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston.  He proudly served as a medic during the Vietnam War in 1966.  Serving others was his focus and he went on to work for the Boy Scouts of America and moved to the Binghamton area.  By 1969 he began his career in teaching middle school science in the Vestal School District and continued for over 30 years.  During that time, he worked part time as a park ranger for Broome County Security.  Jay was an outstanding citizen, talented teacher and devoted family man.  Jay was predeceased by his parents; son Brian Decatur and grandchildren Haley, Cade and Gardin.  He is survived by his soulmate and wife Marie Ellen; son Michael H. (Erica) Decatur and grandchildren Cid and Elle of Ithaca, NY.  Jay is also survived by his brother Robert (Rose) Decatur of Patterson, NY; Stephen (Sarah) Decatur of Houston, TX.  A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday at 4:00pm, at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main St, Johnson City.  The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2:00pm until the time of the service at the Barber Memorial Home.  The family is requesting masks be worn by all.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jay’s name to the Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 N.
