Obituary

Nelly Aswad Shaheen of Coral Springs, Florida, formerly of Binghamton, NY and Broumana, Lebanon, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2021 after a four year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was 84 years old.   Mom was predeceased by her husband of forty eight years, Fred K. Shaheen, his parents, Kalil and Esma Shaheen, his siblings and their spouses, Philip, Amel and Shirley, Dorothy and Richard, Haick, Tilda, William, Charles and Barbara,  and her parents Yousef and Nabiha Aswad of Broumana, Lebanon and her brothers Emile, Fareed, and Edward, and sister Hilda and Anis Mahshi.  She is survived by her sons Fred and Richard and daughter-in-law Deby, her grandchildren who she adored Katie, Kim, and Kevin, Carleigh and Haley, her brother and sister in law Najib and Adele Aswad of Broumana, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Shaheen, Aswad, Nehme,  Mashi, Abdallah, Bomysoad, and Koury families.  She will be missed by her cousin Farida Douleh, her niece Cindy (Shaheen) Johnson, her friend Victoria Butrus, and her caregiver for the past two years, Guerline Joseph Pierre.  Mom’s life was an immigrant’s success story, after marrying Dad as a teenager in Broumana, she came to the U.S. to settle in Binghamton.  She worked hard to earn her GED and US Citizenship, we remember her studying along with us as we did our homework.  She worked at Endicott Johnson, JC Penney, and then spent twenty years as a bank teller for Marine Midland/HSBC in Binghamton, NY.  She loved sharing her Lebanese heritage and cuisine with her friends and taught everyone how to make tabouleh, grapeleaves, hummus, leben (yogurt), zaatar, and baba ghanoush.  This legacy lives on in her granddaughter Kim, her friends Rae Marie Bostrom, the LaTorrey’s, and others. One of my favorite memories is of Mom and Siti making mamoul for the holidays.  In Binghamton she had a close circle of friends that were like sisters to her, Hilda Coury, Olga Shatara, her sister-in-law Shirley, Louise Kontos, and Jeanne Palaschak.    After retiring and the passing of our Dad, Mom moved to Florida to live the last twenty years close to Rich and his family.   She had a wonderful life and always commented that she was living her dream in Florida.  In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the charity of your own choosing.  The family would like to thank Dr. Fawaz Alfarra and his staff for their care of our Mother over the past 19 years.   Mom was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses congregations in Binghamton, NY and Coral Springs, FL.  A Memorial Service is being planned for Coral Springs on Saturday, May 15th, 2021, at 7:00PM and a committal service will be planned for Binghamton, NY at a later date.   Due to restrictions caused by COVID the Memorial Service on May 15th at 7:00PM will be held as a virtual ceremony using ZOOM.   The Zoom meeting information is as follows:
