Sylvia J. (Flynn) Tupy, 86, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021, after a period of declining health.  Sylvia was born on October 20, 1935, in Deposit, NY to her parents Sylvester and Edith Flynn, who predeceased her.  In addition, she was predeceased by her husband, John Tupy in 1994, infant son Anthony, sister Mary Bokman, brother James Flynn, as well as sister in law Mary Ann James.  Sylvia is survived by her children John (Christine) Tupy, Virginia; Julianne (“Jill”) (Bob) Keller, Johnson City; Sylvia (Mark) Spelman, Cheektowaga, NY; Teresa Fincher, Arizona; and David (Veda) Tupy, Whitney Point.  She leaves ten grandchildren, including her “special bonuses,” David and Gerek; and nine great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister in law Barbara Flynn, Chenango Bridge, in addition to several nieces and nephews.  Sylvia studied piano, voice and pipe organ as a young girl at age 14.  She was hired as organist and choir director for St. Catherine’s Church in Binghamton, NY, initially playing on their original “pump” style organ.  For the following more than 70 years, she continued to provide sacred music for many churches in the area.  Music was always an important part of her life, being second only to her love of family.  Her greatest joy was always the closeness and involvement she shared with her children and grandchildren.  She loved attending their many activities and applauding their efforts.  A private funeral service and burial will occur at the convenience of Sylvia’s family.  If desired, donations may be made to the organization of one’s choice; or to Catholic Charities of Broome County – online at:; or by mail to: 232 Main St, Binghamton, NY 13905.  Please indicate, “in memory of Sylvia Tupy.”
